Best Lightroom Export Settings for Instagram

Stop Instagram from compressing your photos into a blurry mess. Follow these precise settings to maintain maximum sharpness.

You spent 30 minutes color grading a masterpiece in Lightroom. It looks incredibly sharp on your phone screen. But the moment you upload it to Instagram, it becomes a soft, compressed, muddy mess. Why does this happen?

The issue is server-side compression. When you upload a 40-megapixel, 15MB file, Instagram's aggressive compression algorithm forcibly shrinks it down to save their server space. To avoid this algorithm, you must export the photo from Lightroom at the exact dimensions Instagram expects.

The Magic Formula: 4:5 Ratio at 1080x1350px

Instagram supports three main aspect ratios for grid posts: Square (1:1), Landscape (16:9), and Portrait (4:5). Because a 4:5 portrait takes up the maximum amount of physical screen real estate on a phone, it generates the highest engagement. You should always crop vertically.

Step 1: Cropping the Image

  1. Tap the Crop tool in the bottom menu.
  2. Tap the ratio lock icon and select 4x5 / 8x10.
  3. Adjust your crop and tap the checkmark.

Step 2: The Export Settings

Instead of tapping "Save to Device", tap the Share icon and select Export As.... This reveals the advanced export engine. Enter these exact values:

  • File Type: JPG (Never DNG or TIF for social media)
  • Dimension: Custom -> 1080px on the short edge (This ensures the final image is exactly 1080x1350)
  • Image Quality: 85% to 90% (Pushing this to 100% generates a file size that will trigger Instagram's compression. 85% is the sweet spot).
  • Color Space: sRGB (Crucial! If you export in AdobeRGB or Display P3, the colors will look completely washed out on other people's phones).
  • Output Sharpening: Screen -> Range: Standard.

Additional Tip: High-Quality Uploads Setting

Even if your export settings are perfect, Instagram might still throttle the upload based on your connection speed. Open the Instagram app, go to Settings > Account > Data Usage, and ensure Upload at Highest Quality is toggled ON regardless of your Wi-Fi or cellular state.
